We’ve written quite a bit about the extraordinary ancient Jewish catacombs in Venosa, in southern Italy and the project under way to present and present them.
Now you can watch this rather amazing 3D computer reconstruction of the catacombs online.
The captions are in Italian, but easy to follow.
The Jewish catacombs date from between the 4th and 6th centuries CE. Located under Maddalena Hill outside town, the occupy an extensive network of passages, along three main corridors on more than one level, and feature several types of burials spaces.
Enjoy the virtual visit!
You can also access the full length and a shorter version on the web site of the Foundation for Italian Jewish Cultural Heritage — and also see photos of the work entailed in carrying out the scans and filming.
The digital project was carried out by GeoNature – Geological and GeoTechnical Consulting. Partners, advisors, and supporters included the Soprintendenza Archeologia, Belle Arti e Paesaggio della Basilicata; Associazione Daniela Di Castro; Giancarlo Lacerenza; Maurizio Lazzari.
This fascinating video from GeoNature shows some of the background work as it was carried out:
