Krakow is hosting two major international conferences dealing with heritage and heritage preservation in the next few days — and it’s a pity that they overlap!
One, the 2024 conference of the Future for Religious Heritage network takes place Monday and Tuesday (Sept 23-24) at Krakow’s Galicia Jewish Museum, but it deals with the valorization, preservation, and adaptive reuse of often neglected, abandoned, or endangered built heritage in Europe from religions as a whole — mainly Christian churches, but also synagogues, mosques, and cemeteries.
FRH is a non-faith organisation that brings together people, organisations, and institutions working to protect religious heritage across Europe.
The overarching theme of the conference is “Religious Heritage in Transition: Challenges and Solutions,” and speakers will address this topic through four thematic sessions:
- Resilient Heritage
- Sustainable Solutions
- Digital Futures
- Quality of Life
“Religious heritage must respond to the changes brought about by the emergence of new digital technologies, the effects of climate change and the way we understand, relate to and value our historic buildings and intangible heritage in 21st-century Europe,” the organizers state. “Our conference will explore existing initiatives and possible future solutions so that the various actors involved in religious heritage, including heritage professionals, academics, policy makers at all levels, religious bodies and European citizens, do not fall behind in this triple transition (green, digital and social).”

The second conference takes place Monday-Wednesday (September 23-25) at the Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences — and online — and specifically focuses on Jewish heritage.
Called Jews in Krakow: History and Culture, it is organized by various departments of Jagiellonian University; the University of the National Education Commission, Krakow; the Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences, Krakow; the Galicia Jewish Museum, and the Association of Cracovians in Israel.
Speakers from Europe, North America, and Israel are giving presentations about various aspects of Jewish history and culture as related to the host city. Topics range from art and literature to demography, religious developments, social and family life, business life, education, Jewish cemeteries and synagogues, and more.
Following the conclusion of the FRH conference at the Galicia Jewish Museum, the Museum will host a panel discussion from the Jewish and Krakow conference on Preserving Jewish Heritage in Krakow.
JHE’s Ruth Ellen Gruber is in Krakow specifically for the Future for Religious Heritage conference (where JHE is represented in the poster session) but hopes to be able to zig zag across town (or at least tune in online) to catch some of the Jews and Krakow conference.
