We are happy to share an invitation to submit a tender for part of a Jewish cemetery project led by the European Jewish Cemeteries Initiative (ESJF), working together as a consortium with the Foundation for Jewish Heritage (FJH) and Centropa.
The group is seeking an organization (or group of individuals) to write historic overviews of the 1,700 Jewish cemeteries that the ESJF is currently surveying in seven countries, as part of a pilot project co-funded by the European Commission. The countries are Croatia, Georgia, Hungary, Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia and Ukraine.

The pilot project works towards surveying vulnerable Jewish cemeteries in Central & Eastern Europe. There is also an important educational dimension to the project recognizing the particular circumstances of the Holocaust and why these sites are especially neglected and vulnerable. Data gathered from each cemetery will form the basis of awareness raising campaigns as well as valorization projects.
A historic profile for each cemetery will accompany each cemetery entered into a database.
This entails providing several paragraphs briefly outlining the history of the cemetery and the local Jewish community, while noting significant personages and/or events. These entries should be designed for a broad readership, but should adhere to the standards of accuracy of scientific work. They should be written in English.
Submissions should include the following:
-
Rozdil, Ukraine: a tree with broken branches, which bear fruit the credentials of the submitting organization, relevant to this assignment
- the individuals who will carry out the assignment and their suitability (including CVs)
- an explanation as to how the assignment will be carried out and the sources that will
be used (2-3 pages) - a summary plan indicating the phases of the assignment, individual deliveries, the
division of labour etc. (3-4 pages) - a fully costed breakdown for the assignment
Deadline for submissions must is September 15, 2020. Completion of interviews of applicants and appointment of the chosen organization or team will be September 30. The completed assignment will be due April 15, 2021.
