New JHE Have Your Say personal essay
COVID-19 quarantine measures forced the closure of Jewish heritage sites and cancelled many volunteer Jewish cemetery clean-up actions.
Monika Tarajko, of the Grodzka Gate NN Theatre in Lublin, Poland, often volunteers with such groups.
This year was different: she used the pandemic time to work in isolation – accompanied by her father – to clear and document one Jewish cemetery, that in Józefów Biłgorajski.
To date, she writes, she and her Dad have cleaned and/or documented more than 450 matzevot.
She writes:
Working with my dad is not only measured in the time that we spend together. Rather, it’s a kind of understanding without words; help without questions from his side and joy and inexpressible gratitude from my side.
In the new Jewish Heritage Europe “Have Your Say” personal essay she recounts the experience.
