
Congratulation to Karolina and Piotr Jakoweńko of Cukerman’s Gate Foundation and to Jolanta Żyndul, who were awarded the Maria and Lukasz Hirszowicz prize at a ceremony June 2 at the Jewish Historical Institute in Warsaw.
The prize was established in 2001 to honor academics, artists and educationalists who promote the history of Polish Jews and knowledge of Polish-Jewish relations.
Cukerman’s Gate Foundation, has researched and promoted the history and cultural legacy of Jews in the tows of Będzin for years. One of its major projects has been the renovation and administration of a private, historic prayer house that boasts preserved wall paintings.
The Jakowenko’s took part in a panel discussion of Jewish heritage in Poland at the JHE-organized conference on Managing Jewish Immovable Heritage in Krakow in April 2013. Here is a video of the full panel discussion:
Prof. Żyndul is a historian of the history of Polish Jews of the 19th and 20th centuries and is the author of many publications. She is associated with the The Mordechai Anielewicz Center for the Study and Teaching of the History and Culture of Jews in Poland.
