Construction work several weeks ago near the site of the destroyed old Jewish cemetery in Brest, Belarus uncovered about 150 intact Jewish gravestones and fragments, writes the blog of the Belarus Jewish Heritage Research Group.
Members of the local Jewish community collected the stones and hope to transport them to Brest fortress, where, according to the blogpost, ” already more than 1,200 tombstones from the same cemetery is being stored.”
The cemetery was totally destroyed by the Nazis in 1941-42 and then in the decades after World War II the Soviet authorities converted the site into a stadium and playing field.
