Work has begun on the renovation of the pre-burial house at the Jewish cemetery in Pszczyna.
Built in 1888 and designed by the local builder Ernst Betz, the low, red brick building with an arched entrance between round windows, is one of the few surviving pre-burial houses Upper Silesia.
According to the local activist Slawek Pastuszka, who has long spearheaded the maintenance and restoration of the cemetery, the work will be divided into three phases and should be completed by the end of 2027.
The first phase, he said in a Facebook post, entails a full-scale renovation of the wooden roof, which should be finished by the end of this year.
The project, Pastuszka said, is being carried out with the financial support of the Voivodship Office for the Protection of Monuments in Katowice. The pre-burial house and entire cemetery were included in the register of monuments in 2021.
The work is being carried out by the company MALIBORSKI from Bujaków, which specializes in wooden structures, including historical objects.
