In February 2019, we posted about how the ruined and long-abandoned Jewish cemetery in Novi Pazar, Serbia was under restoration sponsored by the city.
The work has been completed, and Deutsche Welle this week posted a video about the restored cemetery, with an interview with Fahrudin Kladničanin, leader of the local NGO Academic Institute Forum 10, which has been a driving force in the project.
He speaks about the significance of the cemetery, which is listed as a cultural monument, in recognizing the role Jews played for centuries in a town that today is predominantly Muslim and in commemorating the community that was destroyed in the Holocaust.

In an article in September 2023, Kladničanin wrote that “Tombstones were restored, a complete fence was built, a new gate, lighting, a small amphitheater and a memorial plaque were built. In this way, living people restored dignity to the dead.”
