The full indexed catalog of the burials in the historic Old Jewish Cemetery in Suceava, in the Bukovina region of northern Romania, is now online, on the Jewish Galicia and Bukovina (JGB) web site.
The cemetery is one of the oldest in northern Romania, dating back to the 17th century. The Index includes a detailed map of the cemetery, plus photographs, measurements, and transcribed epitaphs of about 740 tombstones, the oldest legible dating from 1767.
In addition, given that the cemetery includes many gravestones featuring richly carved decoration, the web site also posts a photo gallery that it calls Bukovinian Bestiary: Masterpieces of Jewish Stone Carving at Suceava Old Jewish Cemetery.
The documentation was carried out by the JGB expedition team in 2021 and 2022. The pictures show that some stones retain the bright paint that once also adorned them.
The pictures on this page are our own — highlighting the extraordinary sculpted carving on the gravestones.

I am looking for information on my Grandfather, Lajos Grosz, from Tasnad. He was a tailor. I am unable to say the exact year he passed. However, I believe it was in the early 1930’s. I would love to know the Jewish cemetery he was buried in.
Looking for any information about my great-grandparents, Jacob Moskowitz and Esther Attarensky. As far as I know they are both from Butashon (sorry, I know spelling is not correct). I’d appreciate any information you could provide. My guess is they were born mid 1850’s.
Thanks,
