We are pleased to share this Call for Papers for a conference on Jewish cemeteries in Germany:
Jüdische Friedhöfe in Deutschland zwischen Antisemitismus und Prävention (Jewish Cemeteries in Germany between Antisemitism and Prevention)
Location: Salomon Ludwig Steinheim Institute, Edmund-Körner-Platz 2, 45127 Essen, Germany
Dates: March 5-7, 2024 (March 7: Excursion to Jewish cemeteries in the area)
Deadline for submissions: October 31, 2023

The conference will deal with research into the desecration of Jewish cemeteries in Germany since 1945, its consequences and the question of protecting these places. Also under discussion: the possibilities and limits of integrating Jewish cemeteries in preventive mediation work and in the culture of remembrance.
The conference takes place as part of the research project “Net Olam -Jewish Cemeteries in the Focus of Anti-Semitism and Prevention” of the Salomon Ludwig Steinheim Institute, the Bet Tfila research center for Jewish architecture at the TU Braunschweig, and the Bavarian State Office for the Preservation of Monuments.
Possible key topics include:
1. Desecration and protection of Jewish cemeteries in Germany (and elsewhere). since 1945
2. Jewish cemeteries reflected in prevention research
3. Jewish cemeteries and the culture of remembrance
4. Jewish Perspectives on Desecration, Prevention and Remembrance Culture
Conference contributions that broaden the view beyond Germany are also very welcome.
Another focus will be on project reports from local initiatives (there will be a separate call).
