The year 2022 marked the 10th anniversary of Jewish Heritage Europe. The theme of JHE’s 10th birthday celebrations was the “Anniversary of Anniversaries” — that is, using JHE’s own anniversary to feature other significant or symbolic anniversaries related to Jewish heritage that also take place this year.

150 Years of the twin-towered synagogue in Krnov, Czech Republic

The twin-towered synagogue in Krnov, in northeastern Czech Republic on the border with Poland, was designed by the architect Ernest Latzel and inaugurated on June 5, 1872. It is one of only three remaining synagogue buildings in CZ’s Moravian-Silesian Region.

Events in November and December mark the 140th anniversary of the Great Synagogue in Bordeaux, France

Celebrating the Great Synagogue in Bordeaux, a grand edifice inaugurated September 5, 1882 and designed by the architect Charles Durand in an eclectic style that mixed Medieval European and Moorish influences. It has been listed as a historic monument since 1998.
Marking “big” birthdays for three synagogues: Subotica, Serbia; the Nagy Fuvaros st. synagogue in Budapest; the New Synagogue in Livorno, Italy

The High Holidays are a time when newly built or newly restored synagogues are often opened or rededicated. Here are three that celebrated “Big Birthdays” this High Holiday season: The stunning art nouveau synagogue in Subotica, Serbia turned 120; the Nagy Fuvaros st. synagogue in Budapest turned 100; the modern New Synagogue in Livorno, Italy, turned 60

The 100th anniversary of the orthodox Etz Chaim synagogue in Leipzig — destroyed on Kristallnacht; marked by a week of commemorative events Sept 4-11

The synagogue stood for only 16 years — the Nazis destroyed it on the so-called Reichspogrom nacht — Kristallnacht — November 9-10, 1938.
Bicentennial of the Synagogue in Ingwiller, France

The synagogue was built in 1822 on the ruins of the 15th century castle of the Counts of Lichtenberg, which the Jewish community had acquired earlier.

Marking the 150th anniversary of the destroyed synagogue in Solingen, Germany with commemorative art and digital reconstruction

The synagogue was destroyed by the Nazis in 1938, but this year, events marking its anniversary include a virtually reconstruction of the building, installation of a commemorative sculpture, and other initiatives.

Both sites form part of a rich complex of Jewish heritage in the Slovak capital that comprises memorial, educational, and cultural spaces that are integrated with the life of an active Jewish community.

400 years since the imposition of the Ghetto in Pitigliano, the “Little Jerusalem” of southern Tuscany, Italy

The law establishing the Pitigliano ghetto was issued on October 20, 1622. Jews were confined to a small area of narrow lanes, arches, and steep stairways known as the Palazzetto, located around the synagogue at the edge of town along the cliff, between today’s via Zuccarelli, vicolo Marghera, and vicolo Goito.
