The former Great Synagogue in Illintsi, in southwest Ukraine, was gutted by fire this past week, according to local media and video.
UPDATE: a picture posted on Facebook after the fire was extinguished showed the at least parts of the structure of the damaged building survived. Click to see photo.
Built in the 18th century, the baroque style brick synagogue, located southwest of Kyiv between Vinnytsia and Uman, was one of the largest in the Vinnytsia region. Since the Holocaust it had been used as a furniture factory and carpentry shop.
The web site 20minut.ua said the fire broke out around 20:30 on Thursday night and quickly engulfed the structure, causing the roof to collapse within about an hour.
Watch a cellphone video of the fire:
The Center for Jewish Art documented the synagogue in the 1990s and created a 3d computer model of it — inside and out.

My grandmother’s family, Gollub, was from Zviny Gorodka. I wonder if they ever were in this synagogue… Deeply sad to learn of its loss.
