
The long-derelict synagogue in the small town of Berettyóújfalu in eastern Hungary is under restoration and will become a culture center.
The 400 million forint (€1.2 million) restoration is being carried out with major funding (275 million forint – €835,000) from the the Hungarian government .
Photos in local media show scaffolding surrounding the building, which dates from 1903 and long stood abandoned and in dilapidated condition following the Holocaust destruction of the Jewish community.
The restoration work includes renovation of the facade and roof, replacement of windows, and restoration of the interior including the decorative painting and metalwork
The restoration is expected to be completed by September 2020. The building will include a municipal cultural center where exhibitions and concerts are held. Next to it will be a new service building, which is to house a cafe and other facilities.
Mayor Stephen Muraközi told local media that the restored building will include a permanent exhibition on 20th century Jewish history in the town.
