Somehow we feel that this report, which celebrates life and survival, is a fitting post for Yom HaShoah, Holocaust remembrance day….
Restoration of the 200-year-old neoclassical synagogue in northern Budapest’s Obuda district has been completed, and the stately building was rededicated with a ceremony in April that was attended by hundreds of people.
Standing on the bank of the Danube, the synagogue was designed by András Landherr and dedicated in 1821. It long served as a studio of Hungarian TV after World War II. Since 2010 it has been used for religious services by the EMIH (Unified Hungarian Jewish Congregation) Jewish community, which is associated with Chabad and carried out the restoration, over the course of several years.
EMIH Executive Rabbi and Chabad emissary Rabbi Shlomo Koves presided at the rededication ceremony for the building, and local officials as well as Israeli ambassador to Hungary Ilan Mor also spoke at the event. Geza Rohrig, the actor who starred in the Academy Award-winning movie “Son of Saul” also spoke.
