The annual European Day of Jewish Culture is just around the corner. This year the cross-border event takes place September 14.
The theme this year is “Women in Judaism.”
Hundreds of events and initiatives are planned in:
Austria, Belgium, Bosnia Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Denmark,
France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Lithuania, Luxembourg,
Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Romania, Serbia, Slovenia, Spain,
Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom
They range from exhibitions and performances to food tastings, book fairs and more. The EDJC grew out of an “Open Doors” to Jewish heritage sites initiative in France, and guided tours and visits to synagogues, Jewish cemeteries and other Jewish heritage sites are a major part of programs.
In some countries, there are only a few, even token events. But in others — such as Italy — there are scores of initiatives on the program.
EDJC events and associated events in Italy are scheduled in more than 70 towns, cities and villages up and down the peninsula. These include Jewish and the City, a big Jewish culture festival in Milan, which starts Sept. 14.
Participating countries are beginning to post their programs on the EDJC coordinating web site, and some are also sharing their programs on Facebook.
