The restoration of the Victorian Moorish style Bradford Reform Synagogue in England, should soon be started in earnest, following receipt of the first tranche of a £109,000 lottery grant toward restoration of the Grade II listed building.
The red-and-cream striped synagogue, built in 1880 and the oldest Reform synagogue in Britain outside London, has been in the news (as JHE reported back in March) as local Muslim businesses and community leaders have joined in the restoration effort.
The Jewish Chronicle reports that “the shul has already received £1,500 from local businessman Khalid Pervaiz, who came to the rescue after leaking water threatened the building.”
It reported that the first £7,000 of Lottery money, targeted toward the most critical roof work, was received at the end of December and that “further funds are to be released once architects have planned the larger refurbishments.”
The Bradford Council has also pledged £25,000.
