The restoration of the synagogue in Bytča, Slovakia continues — but slowly.
A recent report describes the latest step — installation of the new ceilings underneath the women’s galleries, replacing the old ones that were crumbling due to dry rot. A series of photos documents the process.
In the report, Michal Filek, who heads the Rescue the Bytča Synagogue civic action group overseeing the reconstruction, describes the project — and the needs.
The synagogue was built in 1886 and has long languished in derelict condition, despite sporadic efforts at restoration.
It is possible until the end of March to contribute to a special collection fund set up to aid the synagogue reconstruction. Click HERE for details and bank account number for donations.
Also, you can go onto the web site of the restoration project, and “adopt a stained glass window” for restoration. Some of the windows have already been “adopted” and new replacements are being constructed.
See architectural plans, and choose the window you would like to “adopt.” This section is in Slovak only, but each window is illustrated — with the current ruined status and the planned restoration.
