A powerful storm earlier this month toppled numerous trees in the two Jewish cemeteries of Venice, causing damage that is estimated will run into tens of thousands of euro.
The Jewish community president and others inspected the damage June 24. The storm, two weeks earlier on June 10, saw torrential rain, hail, and fierce gusts of wind.
The cemeteries are on the Venice Lido, a thin, 11-kilometer-long barrier island in the Venetian Lagoon. The old cemetery dates from 1386. The new cemetery next to it, still in use, dates from 1763.
