Nominations are open for the 2027 World Monuments Fund Watch list of endangered heritage sites — a recognized way of drawing attention to projects aimed at saving the sites. Deadline for submission is March 20, 2026.
Every two years, the Watch selects 25 sites out of hundreds of nominations received from around the world, highlighting the most pressing issues confronting heritage today and embodying the stories of local champions sparking change in their communities.
Heritage places of all types and from any time period, ancient to modern, may be nominated.
These may include archaeological sites, civic buildings, residences, sacred sites, parks and gardens, cultural landscapes, commercial or leisure destinations, engineering or industrial structures, historic city centers, and more. Sites do not need to be monumental in the traditional sense. What matters most is their significance to our shared human story and their relevance to contemporary societal needs, whether cultural, economic, political, environmental, or otherwise.

Submissions must include photographs of the site as well as information about
- The site’s history and significance
- Its community and stakeholders
- Urgent challenges and opportunities
- Your vision for its future
The Watch was Launched in 1996 as “a global call for heritage places needing urgent attention and where timely action can help communities thrive.”
The first Watch listed several Jewish heritage sites, among them the Etz Hayim Synagogue in Hania, Greece, which was restored and then rededicated in 1999, and the art nouveau Synagogue in Subotica, Serbia, which was restored after decades of fitful work and rededicated in 2018.
The Great Synagogue of Iaşi in Iaşi, Romania was on the 2014 Watch list, and the Fabric Synagogue in Timişoara, Romania — designed by Lipot Baumhorn — was included on the 2022 Watch list and is undergoing restoration.
