The Jewish Museum in Frankfurt is currently mounting a major exhibit called “In the Face of Death” — a comprehensive cultural-historical exhibition on Jewish ideas and practices around death, dying, and mourning.
It includes presentations of ritual objects, audio and video installations, and artistic works, that also focus on life itself.
One section of the exhibition, which runs until July 6, focuses on Jewish cemeteries — often known in Hebrew as Houses of Life .
The museum states: ” In connection with the show ‘In the Face of Death,’ we’ve explored the two historic cemeteries on Battonnstrasse and Rat-Beil-Strasse [in Frankfurt] in detail. The results can be seen in the interview film ‘The Good Place,’ shown for the first time in this exhibition.”
The film includes brief interviews with a variety of visitors to the Frankfurt Jewish cemeteries about their intentions and expectations when visiting these places.
The film provides insight into the uniqueness of these two cemeteries and explores the effect they exert in the present day. In addition to the two cemeteries, the exhibition continues its tour by addressing the diverse burial practices since biblical times that form the basis of today’s ritual ceremonies. “
