Volunteers are invited to help clean-up the Jewish cemetery in the village of Turgeliai in the Šalčininkai region of Lithuania, around 34 km south of Vilnius, this Sunday, June 2, from 10 a,m. until 1 p.m..
The Lithuanian Jewish community says the action is sponsored as part of an initiative by the US embassy in Vilnius and various volunteers to help maintain the old Jewish cemeteries in Lithuania.
“This initiative extends beyond the physical act of cleaning,” the Embassy said on LinkedIn following a previous clean-up action last year.
It is a means of immersing ourselves in the local JewishHistory, preserving this rich history, and raising awareness about a Cemetery that, as we learned, has often been forgotten and overlooked. We hope that this action, to tend to local historical Jewish cemeteries, will continue, and we look forward to other embassies in Lithuania, as well as local communities to join us in the future.”
