Mazel tov to Esther Heiss, the new Director of the Austrian Jewish Museum ( Österreichisches Jüdisches Museum) in Eisenstadt.
Heiss, 28, took up the post on December 1, replacing longtime director Johannes Reiss, who has retired.
It is great to see a member of the young generation engaged and involved!
Heiss, born in Vienna, studied Jewish and Oriental studies. She taught at the Institute for Oriental Studies at the University of Vienna, was a university assistant at the Institute for Jewish Studies, and has written several relevant academic papers, the state broadcaster ORF said.
The Museum was founded in 1972 as the first Jewish museum in post-WW2 Austria. It is located in the former mansion of Samson Wertheimer (1659-1724), which includes a private synagogue. It is administered by an association that includes the federal government, the city of Eisenstadt, and the Jewish Community of Vienna.

Wonderful. Is Esther open to a play about a Viennese Jewish woman who was murdered in Auschwitz after being betrayed by the British government on Guernsey?

While I admire Johannes Reiss’s work, especially in his documentation of cemeteries, this museum is ready for some fresh energy, ideas and new displays of its exhibitions. I congratulate Esther Heiss on her new position and wish her well in her work.
The first Jewish Museum in Vienna, Austria and the world was founded in 1896!
Thank you.
