The Willesden Jewish Cemetery in London is calling for writers from all disciplines to take advantage of a new program in November — a Writers’ Retreat at the cemetery November 6-9.
“Join us for a unique experience at our Writers’ Retreat at Willesden Jewish Cemetery,” the cemetery says on its web site. “Immerse yourself in the tranquil beauty of this historic cemetery.”
Whether you are a student finishing a dissertation, writing a funding application or a creative writer we have a beautiful, quiet, and warm space to support your writing.
The writing retreat funs across 4 days allowing flexibility to book one, two, three or four days.
The announcement says the retreat “will be facilitated by Professor Nadia Valman” and that a light kosher lunch and refreshments will be included in the price — starting at £25 a day. Places are limited.
“This is a space for you to engage on your own writing project away from your usual distractions,” it says.
But it provides few other details, such as where writers can set up to work and what facilities will be offered.
The Writers’ Retreat is one of the latest ways that the 150-year-old Victorian cemetery, under its “House of Life” program, is welcoming visitors and engagement from the public in a Jewish space that is redolent of history, art, and culture.

What a fascinating premise and engaging project. Unfortuately there are few obstacles in my way: (1) I live in the States , though I visit London often as I have a cherished stepbrother I see. His father, my stepfather, was one of the founders of the Golders Green Beit Hamedrah; (2) Although I plan to be in London 10-15 November to visit him, I can;t leave earlier because I am going to court with an asylum seeker from Bukrina Faso on November 8th. I AM a writer, can submit some of my publications to you, am deeply committed to all aspects of “memory work,” and would be happy to hear of another such retreat at another time.
