JHE, with its emphasis on news, resources, and information exchange, was developed as a follow-up to an important seminar held in Bratislava, Slovakia in March 2009 that discussed the state of Jewish heritage sites in Europe as well as strategies for their restoration, use, and upkeep.
That seminar, attended by international Jewish heritage experts as well as by representatives from Jewish communities in more than a dozen countries, resulted in a statement of specific “Best Practices” about how to deal with Jewish heritage sites.
Ten years on, the Bratislava Statement remains a fundamental set of guidelines.

Jewish Heritage Europe (JHE) è stato ideato in seguito ad un seminario tenutosi a Bratislava, in Slovacchia, nel Marzo del 2009. La conferenza ha avuto come tema principale lo stato attuale dei beni culturali ebraici in Europa, così come del loro restauro, utilizzo e mantenimento.
Come risultato della conferenza, alla quale hanno partecipato sia esperti internazionali che rappresentanti di comunità ebraiche provenienti da più di dodici paesi europei, è stata redatta una dichiarazione di “buone pratiche” conosciuta come “Dichiarazione di Bratislava” (The Bratislava Statement).
