Call for Applicants
We are pleased to forward this Call for Applicants aimed at Jewish museum professionals.
The Council of American Jewish Museums is offering a limited number of competitive fellowships for its program to Poland in Fall of 2017. The trip is part of CAJM’s emerging international fellowship program—designed to immerse our members in essential learning experiences abroad, with private access to leading colleagues, institutions, and sites, as well as opportunities to talk with colleagues about the work of Jewish museums globally.
In October of 2017 (approx. October 22-29), CAJM will send five outstanding Jewish-museum professionals to Poland for approximately one week of learning
at sites such as:
- — POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews, and other sites in Warsaw
- — Chmielnik, Dabrowka Tarnowska, and Tarnow
- — The Auschwitz Jewish Center
- — Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and Museum
- — Sites in Krakow, including the Galicia Jewish Museum and the Jewish Quarter
- — Orientation and follow-up activities
The program is being designed with Taube Jewish Heritage Tours, and with counsel from CAJM Advisor Barbara Kirshenblatt-Gimblett.
Fellowships will cover entrance fees to museums and historic sites, expert program leadership, tours, hotel rooms for duration of official program, and meals/transportation that are part of the organized group activities. Recipients or their employer will be responsible for round-trip airfare plus miscellaneous expenses including: additional meals, international travel and health insurance, personal expenses, gratuities, and additional ground transportation (taxis, public transportation).
A maximum of one fellowship will be awarded per institution. Fellowships are competitive, and are intended for outstanding Jewish museum leaders (or emerging leaders). Candidates must also:
- — Have a minimum of 5 years employment experience in the Jewish museum field, with the intention of continuing in the field.
- — Have never traveled to Poland
- — Be working on initiatives that will benefit in some way from the experience of going to Poland
- — Will benefit from and contribute to the community of Jewish museum colleagues and CAJM on an ongoing basis—including participating in the next CAJM conference.
Applicants must be either a) on staff at a CAJM member institution (that is current on all dues payments), or b) a CAJM individual member doing substantial, ongoing work with Jewish museums and CAJM (current on all dues payments).
Fellowship recipients will be required to participate fully in the program, as well as in orientation, follow-up evaluation, and activities as requested.
To apply, please submit the following materials by August 28, 2017:
- — A formal cover letter (two pages) discussing your current responsibilities, your need to visit Poland for your professional work, the value to you and your institution of attending this program, and your plans to continue involvement in CAJM after the program.
- — Your current resume
- — A letter of recommendation from your executive director (if you are an executive director, then from your board chair) describing the importance of this opportunity for your institution, and also remarking upon your potential for the field and within the CAJM community.
- — A verification statement that your institution will pay for round-trip airfare plus miscellaneous expenses described above, and that you have not yet traveled to Poland.
