Representatives of the Networks of Jewish Quarters in Spain and Portugal are meeting today and tomorrow (Sept. 18-19) in Cordoba to discuss ways to cooperate in proposing “joint actions to enhance in the work of preservation and dissemination of Jewish culture and heritage.” It is the first such meeting by the two groups.
Taking part were mayors, tourism officials, and other political representatives of cities that form part of the networks, which are civic associations that link pre-expulsion Jewish quarters to preserved Jewish heritage and promote Jewish heritage tourism.
The Spanish network, established in 1995, links 24 towns and cities; the network in Portugal, established in 2011, links 30.
The meeting — which falls amid the Sephardic Autumn Jewish culture festival — coincided with the official closing ceremony for year-long events marking the 700th anniversary of the synagogue in Cordoba.
