A candlelit concert will be held June 28 to benefit the restoration and maintenance of the synagogue in Thann, in the Alsace region of France.
The event, which will feature klezmer and Gypsy music and swing will take place at the synagogue, an imposing structure built in 1862. The synagogue was heavily damaged in World War I, then restored, only to be devastated again during World War II. It was rebuilt after the war and then restored in 1975.
The concert is part of an effort to raise funds for further repair and conservation planned for the coming years. In particular, work is needed on the roof to repair damage from water infiltration. Other work includes the repair of the ceiling of the cupolas and the electric wiring, as well as the pews in the gallery, the wall paintings and the Jewish community building.
