November 17 marked the 25th anniversary of the beginning of the so-called Velvet Revolution that toppled communist rule in then-Czechoslovakia.
Since then, many things have changed…..
Relating to Jewish heritage, in what today is the Czech Republic more than 65 synagogue buildings have been restored or reconstructed in a way that has conserved at least some elements of their former look and use, and a number of ceremonial halls at Jewish cemeteries also have been renovated.
Jewish museums or permanent exhibits on Jewish culture, history and heritage have been installed in many of these places. Ten of the synagogues form the ambitious 10 Stars project, inaugurated in June, which has created regional Jewish culture and heritage centers in 10 towns around the country.
So — to mark the anniversary, we are presenting here a few pictures of some of the synagogues and ceremonial halls in CZ that have been restored. You can find full photo galleries of most of the 10 Stars sites in our Photo Gallery section.
