Many thanks to Jasna Ciric, the president of the Jewish community in Nis, Serbia, for her documentation of the exterior of the synagogue in Subotica, Serbia, showing the restored sections and also the parts still awaiting work.
Fitful restoration of the synagogue has been ongoing for 40 years…..Europa Nostra has named the building as one of Europe’s seven most endangered heritage sites, and, as we reported, a Europa Nostra team visited in October.
Over the past decade, the synagogue has been a priority project of the World Monuments Fund and its Jewish Heritage Program. Focus has been on exterior work on the synagogue and its roof and, as we reported, the stained glass windows by Miksa Roth have been also under restoration.
In February, the WMF announced a further grant to the synagogue to expand and upgrade the exhibition on display there and create a related web project.
