Last chance to visit a special exhibit at the Stadtmuseum in St. Pölten, Austria marking the 100th anniversary of the town’s former synagogue. The exhibition, called “God and Kaiser,” opened in November and closes April 27.
There will be guided tours April 24 and 27, as well as a book presentation on April 24.
The magnificent domed Art Nouveau building was built in 1913 and designed by Theodor Schreier and Viktor Postelberg. Largely destroyed. After the war, the building stood empty for decades. It was restored in 1980-84 and now houses the Institute for Jewish History in Austria.
The exhibition illustrates not only the creation, destruction and renovation of the former Synagogue, but also the history of the destroyed Jewish community. No ritual objects – Torah scrolls, candlesticks, textiles – survived the Nazi and post-war period; the exhibition features photographs and documents and other material.
