Plans have been announced for the latest steps in the restoration of the ornate synagogue in Alessandria, Italy. The new work will focus on reconstruction/restoration of the women’s gallery, described as being in “precarious” condition, and should be completed in time for this year’s European Day of Jewish Culture, Sept. 14.
It will be financed by municipal authorities and other local bodies, including foundations association with two banks.
Over the past few years extensive restoration has been carried out on the building’s facade and interior.
The synagogue is one of a dozen or so ornate synagogues in Italy’s Piedmont (Piemonte) region. Built in eclectic style in 1871, it is run as a cultural site by the organization CoopCulture (which also administers the Venice Jewish Museum and the synagogue and museum in Florence).
