According to the news site InSerbia, vandals struck the Jewish cemetery in Subotica, Serbia the night of Feb. 10-11, damaging nine gravestones. It was the third episode of vandalism against the cemetery in the past two years. In July, vandals damaged or toppled 39 grave markers.
“We urge the authorized state bodies to put an end to this vandalism once and for all and return peace to the Jewish community in the city,” Jewish Community was quoted as saying in a news release about the vandalism.
Among the damaged tombs, the report said, were those of prominent pre-WW2 Jewish families.
Vandals damaged the crypt of Tereza Hartman, who, together with the Konen family, was the co-founder and owner of a successful meat processing business (later known as “29.novembar” enterprise), and the headstone of the Kunec family, which left a deep mark on the public and cultural life of Subotica between the two world wars.
