We are happy to note these calls for Fellowships at the Center for Jewish History in New York.
The Lapidus 2014 Summer Fellowship Program application deadline is March 3, 2014.
The Center for Jewish History and the American Jewish Historical Society offer six-week Fellowships to recent Ph.D.s and doctoral candidates conducting original research using the collections of the Center’s five partners: American Jewish Historical Society, American Sephardi Federation, Leo Baeck Institute, Yeshiva University Museum and YIVO Institute for Jewish Research.
Fellows will take residence at the Center for Jewish History in NYC from June 16, 2014 through July 25, 2014. Each Fellow will be required to spend a minimum of three days per week in residence, working with archival and library resources in the Center’s Lillian Goldman Reading Room. Fellows should plan to be in residence the full week of June 16, 2014 to participate in orientation/archival training sessions.
Up to six Fellowships will be awarded in summer 2014. Applicants should be recent Ph.D.s, ABD or in the process of writing their dissertations.
The program invites applications from candidates working in any field or period whose research stands to benefit from access to the collections housed at the Center for Jewish History (search.cjh.org). However, preference will be given to work that meets the following criteria:
— Makes use of the collections of the American Jewish Historical Society;
— Focuses on 18th- and 19th-century topics;
— Draws on the resources of more than one Center partner.
Fellows will be required to attend bi-weekly brown bag lunch meetings and present the results of their research at an informal seminar. Upon completion of the Fellowship, each Fellow will be required to submit a report describing her/his experience as a Fellow.
Full Fellowships carry a stipend of up to $6,000 for a period of six weeks. Fellows from universities more than 125 miles away from New York City may be entitled to additional funding of up to $1,500 to offset residency requirements.
Archival Fellowship program (presented in collaboration with Columbia University’s Institute for Israel and Jewish Studies)
The Center for Jewish History and Columbia University are pleased to announce six fellowships open to graduate students, post-graduates, and early career professionals in the humanities.
This program will provide fellows with an opportunity to gain hands-on experience in an archival institution while applying the knowledge of language, history, and culture that they have developed in their humanities studies. By working at the Center for Jewish History with diverse collections from one of three participating partner institutions— the American Jewish Historical Society, the Leo Baeck Institute, and the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research—fellows will be introduced to basic archival theory and practice that will strengthen their capabilities as researchers and open up new professional directions for them.
The primary focus of the fellowship is on processing, arrangement, and description of personal papers and/or organizational records. Fellows will work under the supervision of an experienced professional archivist and write collection guides for online publication. A combination of selected readings, discussions, and archival processing practice will introduce fellows to standards of archival description and key concepts in archival theory, such as provenance and original order. Additionally, the fellows will be introduced to conservation, digitization, and reference work.
Weekly seminars hosted by the Institute for Israel and Jewish Studies at Columbia University will serve to enhance the practical experience fellows receive at the Center for Jewish History.
This six-week program will begin July 1, 2014 and end on August 12, 2014. Start and end dates are slightly negotiable if they conflict with academic calendars or other scheduling issues. Over the course of thirty weekdays, fellows will receive 200 hours of intensive hands-on training and practice in archival work. Fellows will be provided with a stipend of $4000 for their participation in the program.
