Restoration work on the 16th-century Remuh synagogue in Krakow’s Kazimierz district has reveals brilliantly colored wall and ceiling paintings from the 19th century.
For all those who remember the appearance … before the renovation, the effect is striking. The pale yellow interior has changed beyond recognition. On the ceiling are again signs of the zodiac from the 19th century, and on the north wall flower ornaments will be exposed from the same period. Some of the murals on the north wall are even older.

The renovation of the Remuh in Kraków / Kazimierz synagogue was undertaken in 2010. Most of the costs exceeding 2.000.000 PLN are covered by the Social Committee for Renovation of Krakow Monuments. After months of the synagogue interior being covered with scaffoldings and limited access to building now the first stunning results are visible. In 2010 the archeologists have uncovered a large filled inn basement under this mid XVI century synagogue. The basement is probably a part of a previously build structure.
Gazeta publishes a series of photographs showing the newly revealed paintings. Click HERE to see them. (We have already shared Cebulski’s photos on our Facebook page).
