A synagogue in Smolensk, Russian has opened under the auspices of Chabad.
The Chabad web site reports, in an article by Dovid Zaklikowski:
Hundreds of local Jewish residents and local government officials, including regional Gov. Alexei Astrovsky and Mayor Nikolei Alashaiv, turned out for the opening of the Beis Malkin Jewish community center and Beis Menachem synagogue. They were joined by Russian Chief Rabbi Berel Lazar and philanthropist Lev Leviev, who partnered with the Rohr Family to fund the project.
The Jewish Smolensk web site shows pictures of the construction of the neoclassical style building, which is sited just outside the 16th century fortress.
