The early 20th century, red-brick Blackpool United Hebrew Synagogue, a Grade II listed building, will be sold at auction in Manchester April 19. The auction brochure states that the building is “suitable for a vareity of uses, e.g., house of worship, function/meeting rooms, leisure, educational, offices.” The bottom guide price is £150,000.
States an article in the Blackpool Gazette:
The building has been awarded Grade II status by English Heritage which means any investor would be unable to make significant alterations without the agreement of the charity.
It boasts a small octagonal dome, checkerboard brickwork and stained glass throughout, with scenes from the Torah.
The synagogue was originally built in 1916, and enlarged in 1955 and 1976. It was iin regular active use until its rabbi left in 2010, but services were held in it until “quite recently,” the Gazette article states.
