Today, April 19, marks the 81st anniversary of the beginning of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising.
The Ghetto, as well as the Uprising and its fighters, are commemorated in various places on-site and elsewhere — the main memorial is the grand Monument to Ghetto Heroes, created by Nathan Rapoport and erected in 1948 on the rubble left after the Germans crushed the Uprising and razed the ghetto. The POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews faces this memorial.
Archaeological excavations have been going on at the site by researchers at the Ghetto Museum now under development. The excavation, near Mila 18, uncovered the foundations of several buildings, and there is a small display of some of the objects found. (Read our post about the excavations and finds HERE. )
