In mid-April, we published a first round-up of some of the many Jewish cemetery clean-up initiatives taking place this spring and summer in various European countries.
Here’s a second Round-up listing more than 50 actions from 16 countries — actions that have taken place since our last round-up, that are scheduled to take place, and that are (or have been) ongoing. In this round-up, we also include a clean-up initiative of a synagogue and one of stolperstein or stumbling stones. Most are volunteer initiatives, but some are initiatives by Jewish organizations or civic bodies.
It is so important to emphasise these efforts, as they are largely overlooked (occasional vandalism, however, grabs headlines).
Click on the links to see details for each action on Facebook, local media, or dedicated website. The links in orange show upcoming or ongoing initiatives.
We know we have missed some — if you don’t see your project on this list, let us know!

I am glad to read about the clean up of the Zychlin Jewish cemetery by the local historical group with funding from the Polish goverment.
Sadly I have read on the internet that many of the tombstones were removed by the Nazis and used as roadworks, so there are just a few
broken graves left and a large memorial stone. Otherwise the cemetery has been overgrown with grasses and weeds in recent years.
JHE, I note that Rohatyn Jewish Heritage has now had 3 clean-ups at the old and new Jewish cemeteries in Rohatyn since our return to Ukraine at the beginning of June. Here is our latest NEWS article covering those (and we would appreciate JHE updating its info to reflect that we are and will continue to be working in Rohatyn throughout summer and fall, despite the Russian war. https://rohatynjewishheritage.org/2022/07/first-clearing-2022/
The Rohatyn project is one of scores of clean-up actions around the continent. We are about to run a third round-up, encompassing initiatives in a dozen or more countries, and the Rohatyn clean-ups are included on the list.
Thanks JHE for this run down….
Rohatyn Jewish Heritage aims to return next week to Lviv and depending on the availability of gasoline for transportation and motor tools, resume our usual cemetery care in Rohatyn as soon therafter as possible.
I thought I’d seen the Jewish cemetery in Wloszczowa, Poland in one of the lists. I don’t see it here but wonder when that might take place so we can make a donation? We’ve just made a donation to the Czestochowa clean up taking place June.7-12.
