A fire has seriously damaged the former synagogue in the town of Inowłodz in central Poland.
Dating from the mid-19th century, the building is currently used as a grocery store but is listed as a historical monument and retains interior decoration including the women’s gallery and wall paintings.
It was devastated in WW2 and after the war used as a warehouse and library before becoming a grocery.
The paintings include a prayer for the wellbeing of the Tsar in Hebrew and Russian and three painted Zodiac signs.
The May 12 fire broke out around 1 p.m. and completely destroyed the peaked roof of the building, but we have not seen information on the state of the interior. No-one was injured. Local media said it took around a dozen fire brigades some three hours to contain the blaze.
