Virtual Shtetl has reported that the first stage of the documentation of hundreds of matzevot (gravestones) that were discovered in 2011 near the town of Wronki has concluded.
Seven hundred and forty headstones or their fragments have been photographed, and personal data of the deceased have been registered. This is the result of the work done by Ofra Reisenfeld and her students from the Section of Hebrew, Aramaic and Karaim Studies at Adam Mickiewicz University of Poznań, as well as by local historians Daniel Kwaśniewski and Piotro Pojasek. Inmates from the penalty institution in Wronki helped in manual works. The action enjoys the patronage of Robert Doran, an assistant of the Mayor of Wronki Town and Municipality.
Wronki’s two Jewish cemeteries were destroyed by the Nazis and their stones were broken and used as paving. Plans have been announced to use the stones to construct a memorial lapidarium with the recovered stones.
