Mazel tov! After about four years of work, the fullscale restoration of the synagogue in Tulcea, southeastern Romania, has been completed — the Federation of Romanian Jewish Communities announces that the formal inauguration of the building, built in 1888, will take place August 22.
The Federation posted pictures of the restored building on its Facebook page — we repost a couple of them here to show the beautiful work — we share the full album of pictures on our Jewish Heritage Europe Facebook page.

A tiny (under 40 people) Jewish community still lives in Tulcea. The synagogue was one of three that stood in the town before World War II and had fallen into start disrepair. According to local media (in 2010) the restoration was aided by a grant of 150,000 lei ($45,500) from the government.

i just came across this site, and i also want to know if there are any records for the jewish families who lived in tulcea in the 1800s, as i have great, great etc grandparents from there, Chuna Leibovitch born sept 1854, he was a fish monger, David Darabaner, Nochum Rabinovitch (died in pogrom, ? moshkovitz. All four were brothers the son of Leib, and all took different last names, but don’t know when, the three that lived made it to canada. Also Esther Danielovitch daughter of R’ Leib, who married Chuna was from there, they married there. Any one know how to research any of this?

Hello I too am looking for relatives buried in Tulcea. Last name is Shapira. Does anyone know the best way to research where I might find their gravesite locations? Thank you, Michael
My Grandmother was born in Tulcea, in 1876, Sima Jacobson. My Grandfather was born in Piatra-Neamt, in 1870, Herman Grinburg. Love to find out how to trace more information about these families. They married in 1896 and moved to Istanbul, Turkey. Any ideas?
I am so pleased to see the respect and caring shown by restoration. My mother was born there in 1904. She was part of the Zamphir family. Her father was known as the local druggist and helped with advice in many matters of life. His name was Elieh.
Hillel,
Just saw your comment….both my grandparents were from Tulcea, Romania. Their last name was Samphir (Joe, born in about 1885), Sarah (his wife, born in about 1892). Am wondering if the names are related. (They left in 1944 for Detroit and on to Winnepeg). Thanks for responding.
I am so glad and happy that our beautiful Synagogue in Tulcea is complitly restored B´H

Hello
In Tulcea there are two Jewish cemeteries. One old, closed in 1900, and another that was founded in 1901.
In this cemetery we found a funerary monument with the inscription “Sadofschi”.
Send other details to the Jewish Community of Tulcea. I am the President of the Community, my name, Faimblat Solomon, tel 0728712851
You can also find us on facebook:

Hello!
It was a big surprise read you here…
Please let me introduce myself: my name is HUGO SADOFSCHI, and I was born in Argentina, in 1958. Actually I live in Principality of Andorra.
Since years, with my cousin, we are trying to get information about our ancestors in Romania, concretely about our grandfather.
We know almost nothing: we are sure that he was born in Tulcea, about 1885 (we are not sure).
The fact that you know that there is a funerary monument there with our surname was a flash!
I tried to contact you at your phone number, but it seems you have no WhatsApp, and I really don’t want to disturb you calling directly.
Maybe you can send me and email to see if you can help us further. I really expect so, and we are so excited to have read your words here.
My email is: [email protected]
I will be so grateful with you to receive your reply.
In advance, thanks so much for your help.
My best regards,
Hugo
