There will be a guided walking tour every half hour of the Jewish cemetery, founded in the 17th century. The cemetery had been abandoned for decades until a major restoration and clean-up in 1987 and a further restoration in 2015.

The theme of this year’s European Day of Jewish Culture will be Dialogue. In the run-up to the September EDJC, the AEPJ is hosting a series of online events about dialogue.
This first session will feature Zuzanna Radzik, Vice President of the Polish NGO Forum for Dialogue. Theologian, author of books. She graduated the Pontifical Faculty of Theology in Warsaw and the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, and specializes in Catholic-Jewish relations. In 2019, she received the Irena Sendler Memorial Award for her work on Polish/Jewish dialogue and the role of women in Catholicism.
Forum for Dialogue is the oldest and largest non-governmental organization in Poland engaging in Polish/Jewish dialogue. Its mission, realized chiefly in small towns and rural areas all across Poland, is to inspire connections between modern Poland and Jews living all over the world.
Its program”Leaders of Dialogue” links dozens of non-Jewish Poles who work in small towns around the country to preserve Jewish heritage — with actions such as cleaning up and maintaining Jewish cemeteries, etc.

Ten non-Jewish Poles who preserve, protect, and maintain Jewish cultural heritage in Poland will be honored at the 24th edition of the Preserving Memory awards, honors that were established by Michael Traison in 1998.
The ceremony will take place at the Galicia Jewish Museum in Krakow but will also be live streamed via Zoom and Facebook.

Italy marks the European Day of Jewish Culture — with events in scores of towns and cities around the country. There are also events scheduled later in the month.
The main centre this year is Padova.
A gathering of Lithuanian Jews and descendants, which includes an academic conference, a cultural fest, guided tours to Jewish heritage in several towns and cities around the country — Vilnius, Kaunas, Panevėžys, Šeduva, Pakruojis — and more.

The 25th edition of the “Preserving Memory” awards honoring non-Jewish Poles who care for Jewish heritage in Poland.
The long-derelict 19th century synagogue in Kőszeg, western Hungary, is reopening to the public after a full-scale renovation that took place over the past two years. The synagogue, which is owned by the state, will become a cultural centre but also will be able to be used for religious services.
JHE’s Ruth Ellen Gruber is on the program of its first public event, Sunday August 28-29 — the opening of an exhibition about Philip (Fülöp) Schey (1798-1881), a Jewish philanthropist born in Kőszeg (known in German as Güns), who had grown rich as a textile merchant and later became a banker for the Hapsburgs. In 1859, Emperor Franz Joseph raised Schey to the Hungarian nobility — he was the first Jew to receive this honor and took the title Philip Schey von Koromla.
The exhibit is called “A Kőszeg Success Story: the Schey Family,” and it presents Philip Schey’s family, life and work: his economic and philanthropic activities, as well as his founding of institutions.
It begins at 3 p.m. and is organized by iAsk — the Institute of Advanced Studies in Kőszeg, which has played a role in the restoration of the building.
The opening is part of a two-day series of events, “Synagogue Week in Kőszeg,” including concerts, lectures, guided tours, and book presentations.
A series of events starting September 1 and continuing until the end of the year will be coordinated as the B’nai B’rith Jewish Heritage in the UK Festival — organised under the international umbrella of the European Days of Jewish Culture (EDJC), whose theme this year is “Renewal.”
