Marking the 80th anniversary of the destruction of the Great Synagogue in Oswiecim, a memorial park will be dedicated on its site.
The site was long an empty lot, with in recent years signage describing the site.
The park is a project of the Auschwitz Jewish Center and has been supported by the town of Oświęcim as well as institutional and private donors from Poland and elsewhere.
Archaeological excavations in 2004 discovered candlesticks from the synagogue as well as the Eternal Light – Ner Tamid.
The memorial will include a replica of the candelabra (the original is displayed in the AJC’s museum) as well as a structure containing historic photographs of the synagogue.
As part of Summer in the Museum, there will be a walk in the Jewish cemetery on Miodowa street. During the walk, senior curator Anna Jodłowiec will talk about the funeral customs of Jews, introduce visitors to the rich and extremely interesting symbolism of gravestones and discuss elements of gravestones. European Humanities University (EHU) and the Center for Belarusian Community and Culture in Vilnius will host a premiere presentation of “Extermination” — an audiovisual installation about the Great Synagogue of Grodno, which was constructed in the 16th century and was rebuilt many times after devastating fires.
Kseniya Shtalenkova (lecturer in the Academic Department of Humanities and Arts at EHU, Philosophy PhD candidate) is the project curator and Viktoryia Bahdanovich (fourth-year student of the BA program in Visual Design) is the project production designer and executive producer.
The “Extermination” audiovisual installation is a monologue on the history of the place as well as an individual experience of a person in time and space.
The installation has been created as a part of the project on “Preservation and Actualization of Former Synagogues in Belarus for the Benefit of Local Communities” by Stsiapan Stureika, Professor of Humanities and Arts at EHU. Project research conducted for the work on the installation was conducted with the participation of EHU students.
The presentation will be delivered in Russian with subtitles in English.

The exhibition “Through Koenigsberg with Jewish Eyes” will be presented to the public. The members of the Jewish Congregation have been able to visit the new museum since mid-September.

As Mayer Kirshenblatt’s daughter, Barbara Kirshenblatt-Gimblett will talk about the history of pre-war Jewish towns, about their typical features and the role they played in the Jewish community. While analysing Mayer’s paintings, we will learn about the functions of the selected buildings, about old rituals and Polish-Jewish cohabitation. Natalia Romik, on the other hand, will talk about these towns’ postwar fate. While drawing our attention to the exhibition design and the selected artefacts, she will raise the issue of Jewish property and tell us what happened to it after the Holocaust.
