Gravestones from the island’s deconsecrated and demolished Jewish cemetery can be seen in the museum, which is located in a 19th century former Mosque. Turkish authorities gave the land for the cemetery to the Jews of Chios in 1823. By 1923 most Jews had left the island and the site, with its walls and ohel, was abandoned. During World War II, some of the gravestones were removed and used for building material, and in 1957 the remaining monuments were presented to the museum by the Chief Rabbi of Athens. (Some can also be seen at the Jewish Museum in Athens.) The cemetery was deconsecrated in 1960 and all remains were taken to Athens for reburial.
