Founded in 1987 and was the first Jewish museum to be opened in the Nordic countries, the Jewish Museum moved to its current site, Sweden’s oldest preserved synagogue, in 2019. The synagogue was built in 1795 and functioned until 1870, when it was sold by the Jewish community and the Great Synagogue in Stockholm — still functioning today — was built. After its closure as a synagogue the building was used as a police station, an auction house and a sailors’ church.
The museum tells the story of the first Jews who came to Sweden, how they formed a community, and how they became a part of Swedish society. It exhibits the original ark and has restored some of the synagogue’s original wall paintings. There are also changing exhibitions focusing on different aspects of Jewish life and culture.
