The Duomo & The Great Synagogue: An Evening of Italian Culture
An evening of Jewish and Florentine architecture, culture, music, and food.
• Informal talks about the history and architecture of two of Florence, Italy’s grandest and most iconic structures — the Santa Maria del Fiore Cathedral (the Duomo) and the Great Synagogue — by Ross King, author of the national bestseller Brunelleschi’s Dome, and noted scholar Professor Francesco Spagnolo, Curator of The Magnes Collection of Jewish Art and Life at UC Berkeley.
• Q&A session moderated by Gail Price, former Executive Director of The American Institute of Architects Santa Clara Valley Chapter.
•The San Jose Chamber players with Cantor Sharon Bernstein presenting both Jewish and Italian songs.
• Italian appetizers and ice cream.
I-Tal-Ya is a collaborative effort to identify and catalogue every Hebrew book in Italy. It is being carried out by the Union of Jewish Communities in Italy (UCEI), the Rome National Central Library (BNCR), and the National Library of Israel (NLI) in Jerusalem, with the support of the Rothschild Foundation Hanadiv Europe.
The project includes cataloguing an estimated 35,000 volumes from 14 Jewish communities and 25 state institutions and will take approximately three years to complete.
The event is held within the program of Ferrara’s annual Jewish Book Festival.
Italy marks the European Day of Jewish Culture — with events in scores of towns and cities around the country. There are also events scheduled later in the month.
The main centre this year is Padova.
Te European Day of Jewish Culture is being observed in Italy with events in more than 100 localities up and down the peninsula.

Following a full-scale renovation, there will be an official public rededication ceremony for the synagogue in Alessandria, Italy.

In the context of Museum Night in Budapest, several synagogues and other Jewish heritage sites will be open to tourists, offering a variety of programs.
There will be events at the Hungarian Jewish Museum and Archives, the Dohány Street Synagogue complex and square outside, and the Rumbach Synagogue. Programs will start at 9:50 PM with the Havdalah celebration at the Dohány Street Synagogue. There will be guided tours, talks, exhibits and a big outdoor concert — Shalom Jerusalem — in the square outside the synagogue.
At the Rumbach Street Synagogue there will be “musical walks” from the synagogue courtyard to the rabbi’s residence, accompanied by classical music and accordion.
There will also be various events at the EMIH (Chabad) Synagogues in Óbuda, Ujbuda, and Vasvari Pal st; the Zsilip Jewish center, the Budavar synagogue, and the Jewish Prayer House in Szentendre.

From September 19 to October 7, a series of events, including concerts, guided tours, film screenings, exhibitions, talks, and more, will be held in the synagogues and prayer houses of the EMIH Jewish community (affiliated with Chabad) throughout the country. The events will take place in Budapest, Mád, Debrecen, Miskolc, and Szentendre.
