Nottingham Trent University plans to convert a former synagogue building into a music center and venue for graduation ceremonies.
According to the Notts TV web site, the university — which purchased the Grade II listed building from the Nottingham Hebrew Congregation in January — submitted plans for the conversion in June.
It said the university
plans to demolish the rear extension built in 1976, to replace it with a modern extension – creating a Music Centre and dining facility.
The Music Centre will provide dance and music studios with practice rooms.
The university also plans to build a new stained glass window at the front of the building, featuring the university’s crest.
The neoclassical building, designed by Thomas Stimpson, was originally built in 1854 as a Wesleyan chapel; a century later, in 1954, it was converted into a synagogue for the Nottingham Hebrew Congregation.
