A foundation in Romania has launched guided tours to Jewish heritage sites in the Maramures region of northern Transylvania in northwest Romania — including the towns of Sighet, Satu Mare, Simleu Silvaniei, and Baia Mare.
The region — known for its folk traditions and wood-carving — was home to more than 150 Jewish communities before the Holocaust. In May 1944, its 150,000 Jews were deported to Auschwitz-Birkenau. Of the survivors, only about 4,000 returned and settled in Sighet, Baia Mare, and Satu Mare, but by the late 1970s, most had emigrated to Israel or elsewhere.
The Tarbut Foundation’s new guided tours will operate between May and October, using certified guides in English, Hebrew and Romanian.
You can find out further information about the sites on the itinerary in JHE’s Romania section, in particular the Heritage and Heritage Sites page.
