A new smartphone and tablet app — Salonika Jewish Legacy — takes users on a tour of Jewish heritage and history in Thessaloniki, Greece.
The app is the second in a series of apps on Jewish heritage in Greek cities. The first, for Ioannina, released in 2014, includes an interactive map of the town’s streets, survivors’ testimonies, photos and descriptions. A similar app is said to be being developed for Hania.
Salonika Jewish Legacy is an initiative of the Embassies to Greece of Canada, Germany, and Israel; the Jewish Community of Thessaloniki, the Jewish Museum of Thessaloniki, the City of Thessaloniki and the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Centre for Hellenic Studies at Simon Fraser University.
An article on the Greece-is web site says the Thessaloniki app:
groups together points of interest in one of six routes and lets users know when they are near. More than 78 articles, photos, maps and brief texts with historical events in English and Greek (Hebrew and German will be added soon ) guide the user through the city’s Jewish architectural heritage– both visible and hidden – that was destroyed by the fire of 1917 and the Holocaust, or has been lost over time.
