Poland — Szydlowiec cemetery documentation project to begin

Volunteers are being sought for a project to digitally document the important Jewish cemetery in Szydlowiec, Poland. The  “Memory in Stone” project will be carried out by the ‘Szydłowiec Shtetl’ Center of the LOGOS Association in close cooperation with Virtual Shtetl, the Internet portal of the Museum of the History of Polish Jews.

Virtual Shtetl reports that:

Each matzeva will be photographed and designated on a map, later to be translated into Polish. All these efforts are to serve the cause of preserving the memory of Jewish residents of Szydłowiec and make the town more attractive for tourists. Additionally, full documentation will make it easier for worldwide Jews to discover their roots.

The Szydlowiec cemetery has several thousand gravestones, many of them featuring elaborate carving.
